Canadian bakery gets bank loan, thanks to government support

Canadian bakery gets bank loan thanks to government support
Accommodation and Food Services
Creston, British Columbia

Liza Thorne has been in the Bakery business for over 21 years, working for different people. It wasn't until she moved to British Columbia that she decided that it was time to start her own business. "I worked for many years for large corporations and really wanted to call all the shots. I know my job and I always wanted more autonomy. This way I could move with the ebb and flow of my business and not wait for a head office to make the final decisions."

The business Liza started is called The Golden Flour Bakery and it is opening soon. "The business is not yet open but we have a great deal of community support and expect it should do well."

BC bakery receives $83,560.95 bank loan

Before the business can open, Liza knew that she would need a lot of additional funding. After finding the Centre for Small Business Financing (CSBF) website online, Liza was directed to the Canadian Small business Financing Program. The Canadian Small business Financing Program makes it easier for small business entrepreneurs to receive a bank loan since the government of Canada essentially agrees to secure part or all of the loan. Liza was able to secure an $83,560.95 loan from the Royal Bank of Canada (RBC) thanks to the support she received from the Canadian Government.

In order to be eligible for support from the Canadian Small Business Financing Program candidates must own a for-profit business based in Canada and have a gross annual revenue of less than $10,000,000. The program supports loans of up to $1,000,000.

Liza used the loan she received from the RBC to pay for leasehold improvements and purchase new equipment for her business. As far as her search for funding went, Liza had this to say about the CSBF website, " I paid the membership fees, looked on the site for programs, and easily found some that applied to me. Without the CSBF I would have spent time going directly to the banks and would have probably been refused."

Liza's advice to other entrepreneurs who are seeking funding for their small businesses is to "Check the government grants and see if they have anything to offer and the resources on the CSBF website are quite helpful."

As for The Golden Flour Bakery, Liza has this to say "I am excited about having my business become a part of the community and contributing to it in the future."

If you are an entrepreneur interested in starting your own small business, consider looking into the CSBF website to find out about the financing options that are available to you, you can also call toll free at 1-866-682-2402 for further assistance.
